You can tell they have appeared by their loud howling. Additionally, in the desert and taiga biomes, wolf dens will generate, where wolves will live in packs with their alpha male. In these structures, you can dig out horns from suspicious blocks that strengthen your tamed dogs, and alpha males will drop their teeth for repairing the horns.
